She is PhD candidate at Deakin University, researching Contact Improvisation (CI) as a relational practice in more-than-human contexts. Emily is recognised for her work in dance improvisation performance and pedagogy, particularly CI and teaches and performs throughout Australia and internationally. Emily is interested in composition, co-authorship, practices of listening and care, labour and endurance, sustainability, ecology, walking, and working with young people. They are fascinated by the resonances between their distinct inquiries and driven to disturb binary categories through the matter and motion of bodies in relationship. Their choreographic approach is founded on ecological principles revealed through relational embodied practices. ABOUT OUR NAME ‘Soma Ontogeny’&nbsp; ‘Soma’ is a Greek word which refers to the body in its living wholeness. ‘Ontogeny’ is a scientific term which refers to the growth and formation of a living thing. In philosophy, the term ‘ontology’ is about what it takes for a thing to exist, but the term ‘ontogeny’ is about how a thing is generated, how it grows. This shift from ontology to ontogeny has important ethical implications, for ontology suggests that things are far from close to one another, each wrapped up on its own, ultimately impenetrable world of being. On the contrary, ontogeny suggests things are fundamentally open, and all participate in one indivisible world of becoming. In other words, multiple ontologies signify multiple individual worlds, but multiple ontogenies signify one world. Soil-Body Worlding is an invitation to investigate your bodied, felt sense of place and time, in movement and conversation with others. The series invites you into curated experiences of bodily attunement, movement and art making which mobilizes conscious awareness to our interconnectedness with the world. We use immersive activities we call micro-choreographic scores which draw upon dance, choreography and somatic practices The practices offer opportunities to slow down, to notice, to prompt imagination, to learn at different scales of dilation, and to feel through sensing and expression our human-ness in a more than human world. Delivered indoors and outdoors in the more-than-human urban environmental surrounds of RMIT city campus, we will use expanded listening practices which attune to proprioceptive and multisensory feedback, exploring our relationship to gravity, weight and time. Employing creative techniques including contemplative photography, sound drawing and collective poetic text we will creatively map the ‘stories’ from our embodied experiences and collectively share our moving encounters. New insights into how corporeal movement can serve as an alternative pathway to relationship with place and feelings of connection will be discovered. Bring: water bottle, comfortable clothing for movement and weather conditions, camera/phone, and notebook (optional) Drawing materials will be provided. We suggest a small carry bag to transport everything! Simple choreographic, eco-somatic scores of walking, standing, sharing weight, and yield, can mobilise multitudinous memories and events from the ecological body archive which performs within a complex matrix of interdependent relationships. As dance improvisers engaged with relational eco-somatic movement practices, our dance of attention plays always within widening fields of encounter. The iterative material of the body archive is the content and form of our work. This participatory workshop investigates how eco-somatic practices can be used to provoke the ecological body as a real-time, moving archive filled with stories yet untold. We will offer expanded listening practices which hone in on different scales of proprioceptive and haptic feedback, interoceptive/exteroceptive communications traversing systems and cells, and our relationship with gravity and weight and time. The practices together with philosophical prompts, will allow us to explore together in movement and text, the questions: How do eco-somatic dance improvisation practices facilitate the understanding of the ecological body as a real-time archive/(an)archive?
